There are no public secondary schools in Santiago, and many students who have been successful in elementary school cannot afford the high costs of continuing their education.
The IHF Scholarship Program provides such students with the resources to continue studying through full scholarships which cover inscription fees, tuition, uniforms, and school supplies. The program also provides organized academic support in the form of regular tutoring sessions at the Puerta Abierta Library.
Because we believe that education should emphasize social responsibility and a spirit of civic involvement, the scholarship program includes a community
service requirement. Each student volunteers a certain number of hours at a community organization during the school year. Many students, including several who are studying to be teachers, volunteer at The Puerta Abierta Library to support its programs with younger children.
The Panabaj Escuelita
In the marginalized neighborhood of Panabaj, where indigenous languages are often spoken at home, the Escuelita encourages Spanish language development and creative learning for elementary school children and provides a space for games and outdoor activities. The Escuelita is now also a part of the Puerta Abierta Traveling library program.
