Guatemala

"amigas guat" Santiago Atitlan is a lakeside town in the Guatemalan highlands. A bustling center of commerce and culture, Santiago is known for its traditional Mayan textiles and art.

Sadly, it is also known for having endured more than its share of hardships. In October 2005, a mudslide covered an entire neighborhood, killing over 200 people and destroying the homes and livelihoods of over 900 families. In the 1980s, Santiago was at the enter of a brutal armed conflict which claimed the lives of over 200,000 Mayan Guatemalans and displaced over a million. The effort to build homes for people displaced by the mudslide continues today, and those whose family members were tortured, murdered, or disappeared still await justice.
