The Guardians of the Jewel is a community group dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting community social entrepreneurship. The Guardians is a grassroots group that seeks to improve their small community while also protecting the beautiful wilderness of the Monkey Bay National Park in their backyard. In a recent visit to Belize, IHF-Tufts members met with the leaders of the Guardians to assess the community’s needs. IHF-Tufts chapter works with the Guardians to print, publish and market a recipe book, the sale of which contributes to scholarships and lunch programs at the local school that the Belize government recently mandated as private. They also contributed to the implementation of a community garden project that helped feed families in one of the driest springs in many years and will hopefully grow to also supply local restaurants, giving the people of La Democracia the tools to improve their own situation.
