Yirtrak Pingüinos is an elementary school that practices social equity and serves the children of marginalized families in San Cristobal de las Casas.
After years of observing the situation of the indigenous population in Chiapas and the problems generated by social and cultural divisions, a group of teachers developed a school that meets the educational and human rights needs of the most marginalized population in Chiapas. The mission of Yirtrak Pingüinos is to promote the personal development of each child through comprehensive and integral education with the participation of their families. Teachers incorporate principles of respect regarding human relationships (tolerance, participation, equity and solidarity) and human’s relationship with the environment (sustainability and the protection of biodiversity). Half the students pay full tuition and half are on scholarship, assuring the socio-economic and cultural diversity of the student body.
“Families are an important part of the project since as a community we all have
responsibility, and I feel the importance of being an active part of this
change, like a seed, that I feel I can enrich the team and the children.” -Maria, mother
