The Puerta Abierta (Open Door) Library offers creative learning opportunities to Santiago Atitlán children through after school enrichment programs, reading hours, homework help, and the traveling library, which spreads the joy of reading to the most remote parts of Santiago.
La Biblioteca Puerta Abierta continues to serve as a true community center for the children and families of Santiago. It houses meetings and study hours for scholarship groups, offers early childhood education programs in a country where preschool is usually a luxury, and takes books and interactive reading activities to five rural schools.
“All of my 1st grade students are reading. I am convinced that their reading skills are
directly linked to The Traveling Library Program. Ms. Candelaria, from La Puerta Abierta, visits our class once a week and shares a story with my students. They are captivated by her story-telling skills and love looking at the books in the book kits that she lends to our class on a weekly basis.” -Mrs. Maria, teacher at Tzanchaj rural school
