Empowering Spinal Cord Injured Persons, Delhi, India

ESCIP works to provide ongoing exercise, therapy, and counseling for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients throughout India. Through this rehabilitation support, the SCI patients learn that they are uniquely equipped to initiate positive social change as they overcome their injuries. In 2006, ESCIP founder Jon Sigworth suffered a spinal cord injury in India where he received treatment before returning to the U.S. for therapy. To spread a vision for life after SCI, ESCIP created More Than Walking (MTW), a documentary which chronicles the rehabilitation of Jon and four Indian SCI survivors. MTW has been dubbed into Hindi and Telugu, with subtitles in 15 languages. Over 1,200 MTW DVDs have been distributed, and it has been particularly effective in spreading a vision among medical professionals in India. ESCIP maintains professional contacts in 10 cities throughout India. They identify coordinators and train volunteers so that support for SCI persons can be local and self-sustaining.
